01 / Practice

Bedside first. Then the unit, the classroom, and the system around it.

Shewit began as a nurse extern on ChristianaCare's COVID-19 ICU and neurology step-down units while finishing her BSN at the University of Delaware. Since then she has cared for medically complex children in their homes, worked as a charge nurse on sub-acute rehabilitation floors in New York, and directed a unit of RNs, LPNs, and CNAs at Buena Vida in Brooklyn.

Alongside the bedside work she teaches: CNA students in New York, nursing students in Addis Ababa, and her own staff. In Ethiopia she advised on growing the national healthcare workforce, and in 2026 she scrubbed in on fistula repairs at Hamlin Fistula Hospital and studied infection control at King Faisal Hospital in Kigali.

She speaks English and Tigrinya fluently, Amharic at an advanced level, and some Spanish and French.

Three threads through the work

  1. 01

    Infection prevention

From CDC and WHO protocols on a COVID-19 ICU, to unit protocols in sub-acute rehab, to research on hospital-acquired infections in Kigali that became training for the nurses there.
